I’m a UX Designer based in the Philippines, currently working with a global SaaS company renowned for its advanced AI capabilities. My professional journey has been anything but conventional, and I’d like to share how I transitioned from a corporate marketing communications career to the exciting world of technology — and why becoming a Women Techmakers (WTM) Ambassador is so meaningful to me.

A Bold Career Shift

In my mid-30s, I made a pivotal decision to shift from a successful career in corporate marketing to dive into the tech world. This choice wasn’t made lightly. My goal was to combine my creative skills with technical expertise and contribute to groundbreaking innovations. Leaving behind a stable and well-established career was daunting, but my passion for technology and a drive to explore new horizons propelled me forward.

A Transformative Educational Journey

Returning to school to study programming and UX design was both exhilarating and challenging. As an older student, I often found myself in classrooms with younger peers and instructors. While this age gap was occasionally humbling, it also fuelled my determination to excel. I embraced every lesson and project, knowing that this new path was essential for my personal and professional growth. Through perseverance and dedication, I successfully transitioned into my current role, where I work on global projects and collaborate with a diverse team.

Championing Change as a WTM Ambassador

Being named a Women Techmakers Ambassador is a profound honor and an incredible opportunity. It provides me with a platform to share my story and advocate for crucial changes within the tech industry. As a mother in tech, I am particularly focused on addressing the “motherhood tax” — the career penalties often faced by working mothers. I’m committed to raising awareness and pushing for practices that ensure fair compensation and career advancement for women, regardless of their parental status.

Inspiring the Next Generation

On a personal note, as a mother to a young daughter, I am passionate about inspiring more girls to explore STEM and technology-related fields. I want to challenge and change the traditional gender roles that might deter young women from pursuing careers in tech. My hope is to serve as a role model and demonstrate that these fields are open to everyone, regardless of gender.

Looking Forward

My journey from marketing to tech has been a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of following your passions, no matter your age or background. As a WTM Ambassador, I am dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and supportive tech community. Together, we can create a future where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive in technology and beyond.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I look forward to sharing more stories and insights as we work towards a more equitable and inspiring tech landscape.
